2026 Conference
The 2026 Stories in Stone cemetery heritage conference will be held on Saturday 29 August (9am - 4 pm) and the venue is the beautiful funeral chapel at 270 Kelvin Grove Road, Kelvin Grove, Brisbane.
This conference follows on from the successful ‘Stories in Stone’ events held over the previous two years. The theme for 2026 is 'Explorations', and the varied range of wonderful presenters include cemetery and local historians, researchers and volunteers, fiction authors, curators, celebrants, and musicians - every one of them passionate about preserving and exploring our memorial heritage.
They will share their unique explorations, perspectives and stories of cemetery heritage and history with the public. Subjects will include how we interpret and share stories in cemeteries; discovering lost graves; cemeteries as a source of inspiration for creating fiction; community activism; the art of talking about death; publishing History; religious segregation in historical cemeteries; what we can learn from the personal objects left on graves; and Victorian-era cemetery architecture.
Stories in Stone is being organised in partnership with the Queensland Cemetery Heritage and Arts Association Inc. (QCHAA) and White Lady Funerals. White Lady Funerals will very generously be providing venue access and catering. There will be plenty of seating, ample car parking, wheelchair accessibility, and excellent audiovisual facilities.
QCHAA are also a natural fit for this event. Coming out of the 'Stories in Stone 2025' event, no less than six conference presenters and two members of the organising committee were involved in setting up QCHAA.
Stories in Stone is a not-for-profit event.
