Let the Dead Places Sing: Grief, Song, and Reimagining Cemetery Spaces
Cemeteries are often understood as quiet, reflective places associated with private mourning and communal ritual. This presentation explores how they might also function as sites for facilitated, community-based experiences that support the expression of grief in more open and creative ways.Drawing on the development of the Grief Karaoke event, this session outlines an event in which participants gather to sing songs connected to loss, memory, and love, within a structured and supported environment. Intentionally designed to be accessible and non-clinical, while still incorporating practices such as the presence of support people, quiet spaces, and clear pathways to further care. In addition, the event operated as a fundraiser, with all proceeds directed to Ambulance Wish Queensland.
The presentation also reflects on the broader benefits of grief in social connection, with research suggesting that shared singing can synchronise breathing and support a sense of collective regulation.
Jo hopes cemeteries can be reimagined not only as places of remembrance, but as spaces that foster connection, community engagement, and contemporary expressions of grief.
